Professor Michael Schwertel, born in 1973, has been Professor of Media Management at CBS International Business School since 2011. His focus is on artificial intelligence, digital media, and innovation. For many years, he has been intensively engaged with the impact of technological developments on media, business, and society.

As a speaker and consultant, he collaborates with companies, media outlets, institutions, and associations. Teaching

At CBS International Business School, Professor Michael Schwertel teaches courses including Advanced Media Management, Digital Marketing, Marketing & Innovative Technologies, Content Creation & Storytelling, Strategic & Social Media Marketing, Digital Storytelling, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, and Augmented Reality. A particular focus is placed on the practical application of AI tools in media, marketing, and corporate communications. Teaching is primarily in English and is strongly project- and practice-oriented.

Professor Michael Schwertel has worked for many years at the intersection of media, technology, and innovation. His professional experience ranges from film, television, and advertising productions to short films, animation, and interactive media, as well as AR and VR applications. During his studies at the Academy of Media Arts, international stays took him to places like Los Angeles and England, where he gained insights into Hollywood productions at PDI, Disney Animation, and Sony Pictures Imageworks.
Professor Michael Schwertel has been a member of the Grimme Online Award’s nomination committee and jury since 2007 and will also serve as a juror for the 2024/25 Grimme Prize. In addition, he is involved in committees of the Cologne Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK Köln) and advises institutions on digital innovation, media ethics, and AI. His work on the jury actively shapes quality standards in journalism, media, and digital communication.

As a sought-after expert on artificial intelligence and digital trends, Professor Michael Schwertel is regularly quoted in specialist publications and interviews, including on hr2-kultur, ZDF, MDR, and other media outlets.

He moderates conferences, delivers keynote speeches at international events such as Eyes & Ears of Europe, and communicates complex technological developments in a way that is understandable to the public and decision-makers.

In his research and teaching projects, Professor Michael Schwertel focuses on embodied AI, accessible robotics, exoskeletons, AI in journalism, immersive XR formats, and physical simulations for virtual worlds.

His research trips have taken him to England, Canada, and the USA, including stops in Silicon Valley and visits to Stanford d.school, Google, HP, Pixar, and SAP.

Professor Michael Schwertel has supervised over 250 master’s and bachelor’s theses to date, focusing on media, innovation, artificial intelligence, robotics, digital marketing, transmedia storytelling, and data-driven communication.

Many of these projects are collaborative works with companies, startups, and media organizations, combining research, strategy development, and practical AI projects.
